Medal of Honor to be displayed at UNG

Updated: Oct 28, 2024

The 9th Annual Boar’s Head-Corps Alumni Weekend ended on the 22nd of September, but great things have happened since then that further impact and amplify efforts made by NGCCA to support and influence our Boar’s Head Brigade.

Our guest speaker for First Call this year was Major General (ret) James Livingston USMC.  His visit was filled with events that centered on and influenced our Cadets, from his guest speaker role at First Call to reviewing the Corps at the DMS Review and dedicating a Marine sword to the undergraduate Marine cadet contingent.  Even his Smith House luncheon stirred memories of his time in Dahlonega long ago.

As North Georgia’s sole recipient of the Medal of Honor, he revealed in his First Call speech, as he laid his prepared script aside, what influence his year at North Georgia played in his entire life journey along with the challenges he faced.  He was unequivocal in his delivery to the Corps that his time at North Georgia made it all happen for him as a career Marine and successful American.

NGCCA’s efforts in providing for him while our guest is what we do each and every BH-CA Weekend for our honored guest speakers and we do it for the Cadets to be impacted by these influential people.  This year, what we did not calculate was the influence his visit may have had on him.

Shortly after the weekend concluded, Major General Livingston contacted NGCCA to inform us that he would like to donate his replica Medal of Honor along with some portion of his military memorabilia to the University for safe keeping and posterity.  This announcement was completely spontaneous and so appreciated by UNG leadership and all alumni that support the Corps.

Next Monday, 28 October, UNG President Mike Shannon, CLA Superintendent LTG (ret) James Terry and NGCCA representatives will travel to Charleston to receive Livingston’s MOH and return it to Dahlonega, where his storied life was launched.

As UNG enters into the era of “The Corps of the Future”, the legacy that propels us to lead from the front in these amazing times for the University cannot be forgotten.  UNG is synonymous with leadership and through our combined efforts to preserve that tradition and innovate for the future challenges, that will never change.
